ALBANY — The state attorney general’s office has recused itself from the investigation of the beating of Messiah Nantwi, who died Saturday after a “use of force” by correction officers at Mid-State Correctional Facility outside Utica.

Just over a week after six corrections officers were indicted for the death of Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility, another inmate has died at the prison across the street at Mid-State Correctional Facility.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick has been appointed as special prosecutor, according to state officials. Fitzpatrick holds the same role in the investigation and prosecution of the correctional officers accused in the death of Marcy Correctional Facility inmate Robert L.

Letitia James said a special prosecutor would lead the investigation into the death of Messiah Nantwi because her office had a possible conflict of interest.
