"Superman" director James Gunn has revealed why modern superhero movies cannot rely on surprise crossovers, cameos and team-ups anymore.
David Corenswet's slightly puppyish Superman radiates a joy in what he's doing, but he’s far from invincible. That lends the film emotional stakes.
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Gunn, whose previous work includes 2021’s The Suicide Squad and the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, and now serves as the co-head of DC Studios, is a major comic book nerd.
The filmmaker said the David Corenswet-led film also comes at a "particular time when people are feeling a loss of hope in other people’s goodness."
