South Africa stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder felt he had no right to dislodge West Indies great Brian Lara from the summit of highest test innings scores and decided to declare his team's innings against Zimbabwe when he was 34 runs short of breaking the record.

South Africa captain Wiaan Mulder declared on himself this morning, 33 runs shy of Brian Lara ’s record for the highest individual score in a Test innings. Captaining South Africa for the first time as they faced Zimbabwe, he was 367 not out at lunch in the second day of the second Test.

South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder passed up the chance to set an individual record score in men’s test cricket by declaring 33 runs short of Brian Lara’s 400 set in 2004.
